I wonder what this is distracting from - did his devilspawn do something? Is the feckless one hanging out with Putin’s latest galpal? Is the arm candy trophy wanting out? Is another tape about to surface? Is the economy going for 2008 redux? Is China about to re-enact Tian an me n Square in HK, with the support of agent orange?

I’ll still question the motives and motivation of anyone who voted for him, even if they did it out of “economic anxiety” or to reduce their likely already-too-low tax burden. Takers gonna take. In my family circle, the loud MAGAts are either bitterboomers who want to return to a time that won’t exist again and probably never really existed, or self-proclaimed second comings of Horatio Alger who still have a parental umbilical cord well into adulthood, but they built it themselves.

The next election is about ending this slimy regime, rather than embracing a great candidate - anyone would be less embarrassing and cringeworthy. Too bad it is an uphill battle and probably unlikely, due to poor education standards increasing the chances of masses falling for propaganda/fake news, the regressive repressive electoral structure in much of the US, and the failings of an opposition to get their act together.

I don’t think anyone really took it seriously. I just see most of his actions as a sideshow to avoid having to talk about real issues.

It’s actually quite genius, whether intentional or not.

Media: “Mr. President, don’t you think an expensive economic stimulus program is premature and should be reserved for once a recession is truly imminent?”

Trump: “YARRGH, We’re gonna buy Greenland!”

And with that, the script of the headlines are shifted for at least 4 days.

Yes, it would be nice to have strategically, and also we can pillage its energy resources. But the days of purchasing huge swaths of land from other countries is over. Unless you’re Russia who just invades, or China who builds their own land in the middle of the sea. It’s the mentality of a rich guy who thinks that everything can be bought and nobody dare tell him no.

Yep, of all the years for a 3rd party to come up with a very unelectable candidate , they chose this year. I live in Illinois, so it really doesn’t matter who I vote for, but Gary J was not the correct choice for the middle party. I think with a better candidate, they could have made a dent larger than Ross did in 92 and to a lesser extent 96.

Greenland was granted home rule by Denmark some forty years ago and has had autonomous control over its own mineral resources since 2009.

We also built a secret, and illegal, nuclear powered military base there in the ‘50s. We proceeded to crash a B52 carrying H bombs, spread radiation over the ice sheet while also losing an H bomb. Now the base is at risk of leaking nuclear waste into the ocean and we won’t take responsibility for it.

We haven’t really endeared ourselves to the locals, and taking their oil probably won’t go over so well.

I think it’d be a terrible idea.

Which is fine, if it were for sale (at a reasonable price). It’s not though, as most of the things that would make it valuable for us also make it valuable for Denmark (who doesn’t have any expensive wars they need to fund). Trump appears to think that he could just bully them into letting it go cheap.

Ultimately it’s about the total value of what’s offered which would need to be quite high. random territory islands are basically worthless to Denmark, technology exchanges are basically meaningless in the modern world (technology is mostly owned and distributed by private parties), our military relationship is already mostly happening through NATO (Putin of course would love it if Trump shattered NATO in order to strong arm a member state into surrendering territory) , Denmark already has a good trade agreement via the EU, and indeed is not allowed to negotiate trade deals outside of the EU framework. None of that is worth anything close to the new natural resources that will be available as global warming makes the Arctic more accessible.

If the US wants Greenland, we’d need to overpay (regardless of what form that payment is offered in) , both because Greenland is as valuable to Denmark as it is to us, and because Denmark has national pride to, and would need to get something good in order to give it up. There’s no way to get it without overpaying (unless you want to send the world back to the pre-collective security might makes right era, countries previously sold bits of territory when they had high debts and felt they would have trouble hanging on to remote territories anyway).

I mean, I get our state is broke, but I highly doubt taxing all of your residents even more than they already are will stop the bleeding of 50k residents a year. My property taxes were like $7k last year and things are only getting more expensive. I can’t believe I’m actually considering running to Wisconsin again.

And you’re definitely right about federal elections. We’re one of those states where it’s safe to “protest vote” because the blue candidate will win our state in a near landslide.

The social things won’t mater if the state is defunct. I’m a fiscal conservative and socially don’t care, and daily I question my decision to live here. I live in an extremely nice area, but I’m also less than 10 miles from another state that won’t screw me over every time I blink. Illinois is a prime example of why the current democratic party will not work, yet somehow it keeps getting looked over.

I totally agree that the current Democrat party doesn’t really work. But I’m n ot sure on Illinois being the prime example of why the party doesn’t work, though. Our state is so deeply mired in bipartisan antics and corruption that I feel both sides have gotten us to where we are now. It seems everyone in our state sucks in some way or another.

I live ten minutes from the Wisconsin border. At minimum I’m considering registering my vehicles out of state...$151 a year is a stupid hike. My Chicago friends are apparently paying $200 a year on top of all the other stuff you have to pay for just to live in the city.
